Undergraduate research assistant
We welcome undergraduate research assistants to help out in lab or conduct your own proposed project with us. Funding opportunities are available via UROP. You can also fulfill research credits required in your degree program. Limited numbers of hourly-compensated assistantship are also available.
We are currently seeking two undergraduate assistants working on 1) environmental Legionella and 2) plant rhizosphere recruitment. Please reach out to Dr. Maggie Yuan and inquire, if you are interested.
Graduate research assistant
We don’t have openings for graduate students who are seeking to start the graduate program from Fall 25 or Spring 26. If you are interested in later opportunities, please reach out to us at the end of year 2025. Maggie will be accepting student from via the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences’s graduate program. Postdoc
The Hynson (https://hynsonlab.com/) and Yuan (https://smil.bio/about/) labs at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to work on a National Science Foundation and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation-funded postdoc. The research projects will be flexible under the umbrella of microbial ecology, including topics such as big data synthesis, identifying traits of microbiome stability and community assembly rules through manipulative experimentation, mathematical modeling of microbial community dynamics, and coevolution
of symbiotic microbes with their Hawaiian endemic hosts. The postdoc will be based in Honolulu, HI. Applicants should have expertise in one or more of the listed areas:
• Microbial ecology, with experience generating and analyzing high
throughput -omics data.
• Fungal ecology and/or evolution including field and/or lab-based studies.
• Theoretical ecology and/or evolution.
• Computational biology
