Hawaii Microbiome Lab (HI SMiL) has been established since August 2024 as part of the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC) at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. We explore the diversity and function of microorganisms in soil, how they interact with each other and their environment. We emphasize the intricate connections between the environmental microbiome and One Health, the health of the ecosystem and us.
Lab Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Mengting “Maggie” Yuan joined PBRC after serving as an Assistant Project Scientist and PI at the University of California, Berkeley for two years. She keeps close connections with UC Berkeley students and postdocs on research projects studying soil bacterial-fungal interactions while HI SMiL grows.
